Professional GIS Volunteering

GISCorps is a volunteer GIS group with a mission to serve underprivileged communities with GIS. Started in 2003, the group has an impressive record of participation in global humanitarian efforts, quality of life projects, and community improvement efforts. Projects have taken place all around the world from Albania to Ames, Iowa.

As Iowans we are no strangers to natural disasters or communities in need, and Jim Giglierano of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources thinks it could be a good idea to organize a local group with a similar mission.

The success of GISCorps certainly validates the overall goal. If there is enough interest to volunteer here in Iowa, we may be able to create a similar organization to assist local communities when an opportunity presents itself.

If you are interested contact Jim at james.giglierano@dnr.iowa.gov.
