Digging Down Deep

An interesting thought for the Monday of Geographic Awareness Week:

Have you ever wondered where you would end up if you were able to dig straight through the Earth?

Jason Davies has created a map to answer this question. His map, above, shows the antipodal shadows of landmasses. Antipodes are points diametrically opposite each other on the Earth’s surface.

Here in Iowa, we would come out in the Indian Ocean. And in fact looking at the map there are relatively few places where you would come out on the land. This map really puts the vastness of the oceans into perspective, even overlayed with twice the land mass there is still plenty of open ocean!

Keep Mapping!!!
